Hitendra Nath Goswami
Speaker: Assam Legislative Assembly

Hitendra Nath Goswami is currently the Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly. He assumed office on the 30 January 2017. He is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party, which he joined on 10 March 2014 in New Delhi.

Born on January 1, 1959, he was a Former Minister in the Prafulla Kumar Mahanta-led Asom Gana Parishad Government. He resigned from the party membership of Asom Gana Parishad on the 16 February 2013. He is a Legislator with administrative experience and good oratory skill.

Hitendra Nath Goswami is the sixth among eight siblings of Late Srinath Deva Goswami and Late Smt. Rambha Goswami. His Father was the Satradhikar of Madhu-Mishra Satra and a prominent citizen of Jorhat. He is married to Smt. Malabika Goswami and has a daughter.

Hiten Nath Goswami started his schooling at the school established by his Father at Borbheta and later shifted to Jorhat Government Boys' H.S. and M.P. School for high school level. He excelled in H.S.S.L.C from J.B. College, Jorhat in 1976 and joined St. Edmunds College, Shillong for graduation. He received his Master’s Degree in Chemistry with 1st Class from Gauhati University in the year 1985. He pursued LLB degree from Gauhati University, graduated in 1987 and started working in the Gauhati High Court as an Advocate.

In 1991, he was requested to fight the Assam Assembly Election from Jorhat constituency as an A.G.P. (Asom Gana Parishad) candidate. Though he did not have any political background, he left his successful career and decided to join active politics to fight for the aspirations of the Assamese society. He contested in the 1991 Assam legislative assembly election, defeating runner-up Indian National Congress (Congress) candidate Dina Nath Rajkhowa by a margin of 4.73 percent votes. He went on to win the 1996, 2001 and 2016 Assam legislative assembly election. Out of his four terms in the assembly, two terms were spent as an Opposition member. He was elected to the 14th Assam State Legislative Assembly on the 19th of May 2016.

His hobbies include travelling and reading books. He has travelled to different parts of India, Canada and Bangladesh. He enjoys watching cricket, football and tennis. He is the Founder Conveyor of the North East Region Students Union (NERSU). The spirit of commitment to the society with honesty, integrity and humanity can be perceived from his interest in child development and upliftment of the poor deprived section.
