Overview of the Department

The Transport Department, in the Government of Assam has two major subordinate offices namely, the (A) Commissionerate of Transport and (B) Directorate of Inland Water Transport and another enterprise, the (C) Assam State Transport Corporation. The department is one of the major revenue earning departments of the State. With the view to improve the efficiency of the road transport network and its administration effectively the department has taken steps for computerization of the department and has started the process of data entry of driving licenses and registration certificates in Kamrup and Cachar districts and has also started issue of smart card driving and registration certificates in Kamrup, In a phased manner the process of computerization will also be extended to cover all districts of the State.

The Transport Department is also contemplating for introduction of the High Security Registration Plates. In view of increase of number of vehicles road accidents in the State has increased substantially. The Government of Assam is committed to look into the matter and take all steps for bringing awareness about the importance of road safety in the present day's context by organizing campaigns, imparting education and creating awareness among road users about road accidents and safety. Several seminars and workshops on road safety are being organized throughout the State and strict actions are being taken against those violating traffic rules. The Government is committed to ensure the safety of commuters, and will therefore strive to provide the necessary means to develop an Efficient and safe transport system.

Functions and Duties

  1. To frame Transport policies for the State of Assam.
  2. To implement the Transport policies through the Commissionerate of Transport, State Transport Authority, DTO & Secretary, RTA, in all districts of the State and through Directorate of Inland Water Transport and Assam State Transport Corporation as the case may be.
